“Grab one’s attention, draw one’s heart into the picture, and leave something in one’s mind. Do not care about the costs. Not about the equipment. Not about technique.”
Growing up and based in Tokyo, Japanese young photographer Shuji Kobayashi captures intimate moments of beautiful woman. The magnifique light wraps the beauty of the female form, and lets them tell a story. A journey of discovering sensual, tasteful and sensitive fantasies.
Your images transmits something very calm and feel very dreamy and nostalgic. What do you want to capture in your work?
My key element of most images is the light. I want to capture the beauty of light. I also want to enhance and tweak that light by optically showing the existence of the light.
Another thing that I want to capture are the sensual and quiet personal moments of my models, but portrayed through my filter.
What is the essence of a good picture?
Grab one’s attention, draw one’s heart into the picture, and leave something in one’s mind. Do not care about the cost. Not about the concept. Not about technique. Not about the equipments. Certainly not about who is in the picture.
Colour vs. Black and White?
I always love B/W, but I stick with colour…for now. Once I have read some people talk about the B/W photos, and it was something like, “B/W is unfair. Everything looks good or cool in B/W photos. Since I have read that, I stay away from desaturating my colour images into B/W.
Analog vs Digital?
I shoot 100% digital in these days, but I started taking pictures on films. I sometimes feel more like shooting with films, especially when I saw someone shoots amazing images with film cameras.
The most important thing in life?
Wow, I have never expected this question. I believe every human being has a mission to inherit from the previous generation to entrust the next generation. I hope my photographs affect someone and that someone inherits something from me.
Where can we find you on a Friday night?
Please call me on a Friday night, and I can tell you where I am.
And where do you see yourself in a few years?
I hope I am still taking pictures of someone somewhere.
