Brazil born but Sydney based Babi Bertoldi is a 24 years old creative kid with much hunger for music, art, filmmaking, photography, travels, opinionated people, girls and strange situations.
Traveling to her homecountry Brazil this summer she started her newest photographic project called ”The Girl”. It´s about spending a week ”living” the life of her subject (the girl), photographing her in her own space, where she lives and portraying who she is, what she represents meanwhile featuring her clothing/fashion style and a little bit of her life in general. The aim of the girl is sharing a few days together exploring her life views, fashion style, music sense, opinions, room architecture. And bringing a sense of understanding to the viewer of who that girl is at this very moment in her life. “The idea is to show all types of girls from all over the world; hidden talents. It´s a soothing way to introduce them to the world.” Rafa is the first girl that Babi Bertoldi spent about a week together with. Delving her life together. All documented on film.
Rafa Cam, 23 lives in Curitiba – Brazil in a shared apartment with her cat.
“I am a make up artist and hostess at a bar two times a week, Deejay at parties and an intern in a marketing agency. I am part of the new generation, working in a million of unstable jobs and you try to find what you really want to be in some of these occupations. I have been living on my own for a while now and to pay for all my expenses I basically earn my living from parties, as a hostess, but it´s not just about having fun there; it requires a lot of seriousness and just like in any other job I have to be professional.
I started working at a young age in a hair saloon, as a make up artist. I’ve always liked this universe of fashion and beauty, working hard to find references and being ahead of what’s new. Working as a make up artist was a door to enter this artsy universe. I like to express myself through that kind of work but would never work at a hair saloon ever again. Now I started working as a marketing intern. I realize that most of the marketing is used with bad intentions, just for the sales. It certainly doesn’t feel good to work in that environment, especially because I’ve studied for so many years to get to a point where I will be surrounded by creating ideas of corruption. I rather work on something where I can really be myself.
I also love working with fashion and worked at Zara before and I honestly felt an exploration of women that work there, making every piece of clothing for cents on a slavery work. I want to work with fashion but not like that either. I have been a hostess for about 4 years now, I enjoy it but I really want a job that will satisfy me.
B – What is this new generation?
R – It’s the people that were born before 1989 until 2000’s – us Babi!
We are in our early 20’s and we just cannot accept the situation of our society anymore. We are activists in the Internet, we don’t accept conservative opinions neither extreme immoral attitude from our own family members.
Our language is not silent anymore – it’s not our fault; we were just born in this generation you know?
B – Could you describe how you like to dress?
R – I like a little bit of everything. I go to many second hand shops and I really like things that are vintage; that are unique and that’s why I don’t wear high fashion clothes. I guess I also dress up according to my emotion, I don’t really have a proper style. I could wake up today and put on a fur jacket with leather pants and the next day I would just wear sandals with a swimsuits.
B – Can you describe a “Rafa day off” – What would it be like?
R – I would wake up early around 10am, drink some coffee, watch tv series on my computer then go for a run, prepare a massive brekky or lunch. Chilling at home, maybe read a book, listen to some music, do some of the housework – oh I forgot mention that I would obviously be doing all of that whilst smoking a joint. In the afternoon I would create some music, eat really well, go to a secondhand shop buy clothes and at night I would go out to dance.
B – What’s the ideal world to be living today?
R – The ideal world right now would obviously be, not to live in Brazil at the moment because there is no salvation here. There is massive corruption within our people but don’t get me wrong, the country is great. It would be amazing to have all drugs legalized and women having their rights, therefore, no men harassing them on the streets. A world without taxi drivers – uber only! I am not asking for a perfect world, it’s alright to have mean people around to create a good balance, although that does not apply for people that oppress anyone, such as the church fanatics, specially evangelists in Brazil. These religions are a step back when we are trying to take one forward. Our society just can’t accept certain old believes anymore.
B – Where do you like to go out in Brazil – what do you do there?
R – As I started going out when I was really young, I already kind of experienced everything I needed, so I try to select more where I go out. Normally I enjoy techno music, house music. I always try and bring my friends to my house but lately I’ve been organizing my own party, which is a mix of combo and house music. The idea now is to start occupying public spaces to bring music, art and fun to my people. Basically wherever we find a structure that is safe for everyone to enjoy themselves.
B – Favorite music at the moment?
R – I am really digging Latin music; Cumbia, mixed with techno and house music. It’s sassy as!
