Photographer and director Paul Capra shots on film/digital/cinema format working for campaigns, branding and adverts. Trying to stay consistent with his style, his recognition value is a very natural approach even when it comes to shooting digital. We had a brief chat with the incredibly gifted professional about the imperfect moment, his role model and his recent trip to Thailand. And now it’s time to fall in love…
Photographing on film fascinates you because…
It’s raw. An imperfect feeling/moment captured with a single frame that’s not retouched vs a digital image that’s perfected and spray/pray technique means more to me. laughs. I’m weird that way!
Actually most of your digital work also has this analog look. Why is it an essential part for your style to create this natural feeling?
I try to keep the continuity, coming from a film background it’s important to stay consistent with my style. Plus I like when people recognize me for my style, they look at a picture and say that’s Paul’s image. Often times I improvise moods with talent on the spot. Can be good if the talent is willing to create with me otherwise, things can go south quick considering models aren’t actors/actresses.
You also shot campaigns and adverts. What brands would you still love to shoot for?
Anything that fits my style accordingly, my raw style has faults in companies eyes although the A-typical person loves to tumblr/re-post my image when it comes to companies. Most want a retouched perfect image and explaining that film is not meant to have that look gets old quick so there’s a line I have to meet somewhere close to halfway. I’m working on a lot of directing commercials, music videos, fashion style stuff for 2016-17. I’ve taken a big step back in still world, kinda re-taught my motion skills and started expanding my horizon to really show my thought process in 24fps as apposed to just one still.
Your role model workwise?
My wife, may sound pretty lame but she’s what keeps me moving day to day. I’m an artist, not a conversational piece, I have my social flaws. laughs. Don’t know how she does it but she keeps that shit fresh.
You have just returned from a trip to Thailand. Besides film rolls, what have been the most inspirational memories that you have taken home with you?
DEWD, dood, dude, besides me breaking two cameras out there and seeing two days of sunlight, a hurricane and consistent rainfall, I just finished my first travel film from that trip! Should be releasing it in the next couple days. I was NOT expecting to shoot a lot of video there and honestly I typically shoot 100 to 1 ratio on what I use to edit and maybe throw a 1min dope overview of the trip together. Well, I ended up shooting literally 300gb in video for my 17 days in Thailand cuz I had to do stills as well and don’t know how I did it but used 85% that 300gb to create a 4min short film. Theoretically, kinda insane. Just finished the picture lock today, should be out in a couple days!
Favorite Book?
Have never read a single book from cover to cover in my life, only pieces then my ADD starts to take over my brain.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Continuing to create but on a whole new level.
