Maty, Tell us a bit about yourself and where you grew up…
I was born in Gran Canaria, a volcanic island close to the African part of the Canary Islands. I grew up there, with my parents in a house close to a dormant volcano. Growing up there I spent half my life on the beach, it really is a beautiful place. As a young adult I moved to Barcelona to study fine art and I am currently still living here.
Your main purpose of doing art is…
I’m not actually sure if I have a “purpose” in doing art, more sense of feeling and connection. When I am happy and in a positive moment, I feel like creating. My senses are opened through creativity and I like to spend a lot of time observing my surroundings. Nature, architecture, people, life in general can always offer me inspiration.
“When I am happy and in a positive moment, I feel like creating.”
Your work features the woman´s body in all dimensions. Have you always been interested in these theme?
When my parents got me a PlayStation 1 for my 10th birthday, I played Tekken 2 continuously with female characters. This led me to start drawing girls in a sort of Manga style, with half naked bodies, different coloured hair and big wide eyes. It is around this time I think I started to discover my interest in the female form. I find a lot of harmony in the human body, especially a female’s. It is really a beautiful thing to observe the infinity of forms that a human body can have and how these can change under the influence of differing lights.
What is your favourite music to listen to while painting?
Depending on my mood, my favourite music to listen to while painting usually involves something from Eric Satie, Nicolas Jaar, Kalabrese, Sade, Fleetwood Mac and Chic.
“It’s important to me to leave my mobile down when talking with others and having a real form of human connection and conversation. “
Have you ever broken the law?
Yes, but nothing too serious…the usual stories of drinking in the street etc.
How much time are you spending on social media?
I don’t like to spend too much time on social media, especially when meeting people. It’s important to me to leave my mobile down when talking with others and having a real form of human connection and conversation. I keep social media as a tool to use in my alone time.
Favorite place to be…
the island of La Palma on a starry night, I´ve never saw a sky like that before and felt that closed to space, magical
