“Personally, I think a good picture should exist in a world that is extremely similar to ours. I like a sense of ease in a photo. Something that makes that “world” seem like a nice place to live. I want to spend actual time with the people in a good picture.”

Inspired by the 80s minimalism and music the 29 year old New York based photographer Danny Lane creates an imagery full of easy moments and contingencies. A mix of smiling faces, thoughtfulness, surprising facial expressions and enjoyment of life.

What is the essence of a good picture?

Personally, I think a good picture should exist in a world that is extremely similar to ours. I like a sense of ease in a photo. Something that makes that “world” seem like a nice place to live. I want to spend actual time with the people in a good picture.

Photography has never been so popular – and today, where everyone is having a camera or a powerful phone, we live in a very visual world. So do you think it is still possible, as a photographer, to be unique nowadays?

You’re right. Everyone is a photographer and everyone wants to do everything. I think it’s cool. I’m one of those people..so it’s hard to say anything. I think it’s still very possible to be unique. Everyone is so different.

What is the most challenging aspect when you are shooting?

Sometimes it is difficult for me to focus on the pictures as much as the subjects.

Planned vs spontaneous?

Spontaneous.

How would your friends describe you?

I just asked my roommate Joe and he said “tall.” Then I asked my better roommate Chris and he said “a family man with an edge.” I texted Danielle and she said “a very young and hungry soul” but then she was like “wait let me think about it” but I am just gonna go with that. Max said I am an “outgoing hermit.”

The most important thing in life?

I won’t rant..but the most important thing in life has to be doing the right thing. Do the right thing. Please don’t be mean and don’t be judgey or creepy or a bad murderer or weird asshole. Hang out with your family if you get along. Don’t cheat on your boyfriends or girlfriends or boyfriends and girlfriends. Pay attention to each other…and hire me for photo jobs. Do the right thing.

In an interview last year you told that you see yourself sitting at your desk in your apartment working on something great in 10 years. Do you still have the same thoughts on your future?

In ten years, a lot of interesting things can happen. No matter what I am doing in ten years..whether it be working a city job or lifting weights in jail..I will be up to some sort of artistic something. Hopefully it’s not jail and I’m able to have a camera and meet with clients and stuff. It won’t be jail.
