“Getting a good photograph always makes me happy. I wouldn’t die without doing it, but it makes me feel better when I do.”
We almost forgot about space and time when browsing through the tumblr site of Chuck Patch, called Briefly, Chuck. “This blog has become the space where I post stuff I’m dredging up as I scan my way through the pile of negatives I shot in the 1970’s.” True photographic treasures take you back years ago, and sometimes make you wonder about what sort of life all these strange, yet somehow familiar people on those images have nowadays. He or she suddenly seems familiar to you as you now seem to share this moment- the person being captured in his/her experience and you observing it in this very minute. We find Chuck´s work intriguing; even though each moment is fading his images give you this feeling of something enduring, even if just a memory. Maybe his unforced approach to taking picture has had this good effect on his work, that comes with a natural, easy feeling, but still has this serious side to it that an image needs in order to survive and become a witness of its time. “For the most part, I’ve never really played the photography game, have never depended on it for my living, never tried whole-heartedly to achieve success by any measure of wealth, publication, or exhibition.” His more recent colour work on flickr is like a wonderful diary as well; many of his photographs captures the streets of America with light humour, leaving us feeling warm.
If you want to know more about his life and work and how the internet has changed his perception of photography you can read all in this very interesting interview with LPV Magazine.
