” I turn off comments under most of my works on flickr, I think those tend to be quite shallow and monosyllabic these days. The internet seems to be all about the quick feedback, the likes, favourites etc. I turn for feedback to my loved ones…..”
When I stumbled over the work of Poland based artists Magdalena Nishe I felt like entering another world. The 29-year-old works under the pseudonym Nishe and will captive you with her particular visual language and composition. Her motives are young people, landscapes and lovers. The moments that she holds are not only about laughter, but also the sad ones. Even in these she reveals unsuspected deep beauty.
Your images look very staged and deliberate. What is the usual creative process at a shooting?
Usually I start with a thought or a feeling that’s been on my mind, something that I’ve wanted to portray. Ideas come to me in a visual form, I imagine things and then try to recreate and photograph the imagined.
Some of your work also give the viewer food for thought. F.e. the images with tears in eyes. What do you want to capture?
I want to capture something that is important to me, something real and pure. I want my images to have depth. I collect memories that need to be saved and not forgotten, it seems some viewers can connect to how I felt while creating my works or something that I captured in a photograph, it becomes a mutual feeling.
You are living in Poland. How would you describe your home-country? And does this also influences your work?
It’s quite beautiful. I love the change of seasons. Right now we have the most wonderful golden Autumn which hopefully will be followed by a crisp Winter with lots of snow. Summer is lush and rich in blooming nature preceded by soft and subtle Spring. They influence me greatly. I love my home and how light travels through it during the day, every room has sunlight at different times of the day. I find beauty all around me, but my home surroundings are especially important to me as they bring back all the best childhood memories.
Do you think there is a difference between your work as a female artist compared to male photographers?
There are many female photographers whose styles differ so much, I wouldn’t speak generally about other female artists. I’d say my work differs from the works of most male photographers that I know of, it’s probably the nostalgia, the choice of subjects and a sort of quiet quality that makes my photography different. I prefer magic and fantasy over reality. However two male photographer come to mind when I think of what speaks to me and hopefully, to an extent, I have in common with them as a photographer: Romain from lecamromain.com the way he captures emotions in his work and the delicacy of his portraits; Tim Walker the fantasy and magical aspects of his
work that I adore.
How important is feedback for you?
Good feedback from people who follow our work can be quite uplifting when we have worse days. Relying too much on it could potentially make one less free and more focused on creating for the viewer (or for the „likes”) and not being very true to oneself. I turn off comments under most of my works on flickr, I think those tend to be quite shallow and monosyllabic these days. The internet seems to be all about the quick feedback, the likes, favourites etc. I turn for feedback to my loved ones, especially my boyfriend who can point me in the right direction, he notices things that I might have not seen after looking at an image for too long.
What camera do you use?
Canon A-1 for film, digital Canon 5d, Instax – these are my most used cameras.
And how do you reset to be creative?
Fortunately I don’t need to reset, I take photographs when I feel creative and inspired. I have a different day job so mostly I miss photographing more than I don’t.
What makes you happy? And what makes you sad?
Sunlight, having a day all to myself, being close to my loved ones, reading. The awful amount of violence happening all around the world. Rushing, dark days, forcing myself to do things I dislike doing.
Who is your celebrity crush ?
I’m having a hard time answering this one, Alexa Chung maybe? Olly Alexander too.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
Traveling more and then living a quiet life in a house that stands on a hill with the most beautiful view.
A question we should have asked you?
What do you miss? The sea, my muse, sometimes the naivety of a child about the world.
