“It sounds corny but I truly do dream of peace. Just a place where we can all show love, support, encouragement, honesty, and just get along. I really want to promote that in my music and somehow influence a generation.”
tells Nina A Vann alias Nina Kimiko. What a beauty inside and outside! Born and raised in California the young singer and songwriter shares her love into music since the age of 11 when she wrote her first song. Later, at the age of 17 she joined a rap group called “Blocc Runnaz” where she graced the tracks with her soothing vocals. Taking hardcore hip hop sounds and throwing her melodic and angelic voice over them she began to create her own sound and she is ready for the world. In our interview she talks about her new year plans, being a dreamer and how small gestures can have a huge affect.
I can feel from your instagram site, the pic and quotes and even from your music a lot of romance shining through. Am I mistaken? What do you like to write your songs mostly about? Love? Personal experiences?
Absolutely, I am a big romantic. Like every girl I love romance and want that love like the movies lol. I do also write about heart break because in a sad way it’s easier for me to identify with lol. Sounds horrible I know but my music comes from a real personal place. And unfortunately heartbreak was very present in my life. Every song is from a situation I went through or dealt with. I like to write mostly about life, whether it be my situation or my friends situation.. things that are really happening in peoples everyday lives that they can relate to, use to get through a situation or just zone out to and figure shit out.
I also feel this vibe of a very positive and strong person. Is that how you would consider yourself, or do we sometimes get a complete wrong impression from people as through all the social networks people are trying to portray themselves in the best way only and not necessarily in the most honest way?
I mean there are people that do “front” and try to be this super positive outgoing caring person but their everyday life and actions do not reflect that. And we “the viewers” would never know because we aren’t there. I can say that my life and my personality are very positive. Even if it’s just saying hello to someone passing by and smiling, that to me is so huge! It can literally change someones whole attitude! It’s such a small gesture but has such a huge affect. I’ve been told because I said hi to someone that I made them realize they DO matter.. that could have been a suicidal situation and because I acknowledged them I pretty much saved a life.. thats crazy! So positivity goes a long way! As far as being strong, I’ve been through a lot which yes I feel makes me very strong person. In this life, you gotta be!
What does music and singing mean to you?
Music and singing mean the world to me! I’ts my therapy, my happiness, my hiding place when everything is going wrong. Its my vacation from all the bs we go through in life. I honestly don’t know where I would be mentally if it wasn’t for music. I cant imagine a world w/out it. Singing is my outlet when there is nobody there to vent to or listen to me. It’s such a freeing feeling to be able to get something out of your head and into this place where it now becomes therapeutic. Getting that emotion out onto a record is just such an amazing thing.
On your Instagram you say you are a dreamer. Your biggest dream in life?
Yes, I am one of the many dreamers in this world. It sounds corny but I truly do dream of peace. Just a place where we can all show love, support, encouragement, honesty, and just get along. I really want to promote that in my music and somehow influence a generation. Music speaks volumes to people and us as musicians who have the opportunity to promote something positive need to do that. so I dream of peace amongst others, my family and myself.
And your biggest fear?
My biggest fear is sitting in a rocking chair at the age of 65, looking back and not being happy w/ the life I lived. To me that is sooo scary because you cannot rewind time. You cant go back! A fear of not accomplishing my goals and living outside of the box. A fear of living life in fear. I want to explore all that i can in life.. this world is so big and so much to see. I want to give that to myself and my family.
The best thing on living in Los Angeles
Well I lived in Los Angeles for about 4-5 months and instantly fell in love. I am originally from San Diego, (still West-coast woot woot! LOL) born and raised but currently travel back and forth to LA. Mannn the mentality of the people in LA intrigue me so much. They are so driven and always have some idea or something going on. Not to say those type of people aren’t in San Diego but my experience in LA just stuck w/ me. It felt like home even though I did not grow up there, I fit right in w/ the people there and the spirit of the city.
The best life lesson so far…
Cherish people that you are blessed to have in your life. Learn that letting go of something doesn’t always mean a loss. And getting a chance to love even if its not what you planned it to be is still LOVE! Take those experiences and apply them to your life. Cherish everything big and small! And if you never try something you’ll never know you were a genius at it! Believe in yourself all the way… great things come of that!
New Year Plans?
To be performing at Coachelllla! lol mann just being in that crowd last year was amazing! I can only imagine what it’s like on stage. Also just to have the love of the people! To have everybody and their momma vibing to my music! To be a lot further than I am today obviously and just have an amazing year!! 2015 is looking mighty nice lol.

I agree heartily with Nina Kimiko. Music brings be back to a happy feeling whenever something is stressful. For example this last Thanksgiving my oven broke down but while I was looking around to get my oven fixed I played some old violin recordings from college and I was smiling immediately, and was still smiling when the technician arrived. I think the music made his day better too! The turkey turned out great, btw.
This is exactly what I needed to read today. Your tips are practical and easy to follow. Thanks for the helpful advice!
