“The Underground is more of a spirit that never leaves me …doing what I like with no compromises or corporate influence ever.”
DJ W!ld´s groovy music melting with the first mild spring days bringing forward the yearnings to come out from behind the little winter retreat and be more active. With his roots ranging from hip-hop, Chicago, Detroit techno over to house, also his present musical influences cannot be reduced to one common style and those diverse flavours top off the outcome of his sound. Also his ambitions for the future couldn´t be less manifold. “To produce new albums in different genres and music for movies. To keep growing slowly but constantly until I die. To help some artists to grow and push them to the top. To create a place where you have a label, recording studio, private club and restaurant combined for artists of all types to mix up all sources of creativity. To set up a workshop for kids to open their ears and eyes as soon as possible.”
With a thrill of anticipation we are awating DJ W!ld´s double EP ‘When you feel me, the remixes’ out on May 25th 2015 and have spoken to the French artist about love, creating music for fashion shows and his frank dealings with smoking…
“Deep, dark, acid and a little bild w!ld and always sexy music” is quoted on your soundcloud. Is that also the way you could describe your personality?
Well, I think my personality is a bit deeper, but that is a quick description of me I guess!
“Some people take their inspiration from other stuff, I get it from love.” You said in an interview. And that you can´t be creative if you don´t have a woman who inspires you. Do you fall in love easily?
No not really!!! but I´m so productive when it happens that I have reserves of music for many years after.
You used to be a hero in the Parisian underground scene. Despite being deservedly proud of your international success nowadays, do you sometimes miss those underground times? I mean there is nothing like being recognized by a wider audience, but there is also something about those raw, innocent beginnings where we are not sure at all about what to expect, right?
Definitely. I miss those times too that’s why I still do some smaller parties! The Underground is more of a spirit that never leaves me …doing what I like with no compromises or corporate influence ever.
You also admitted once that the biggest challenge for an artist breaking through into the big league is to not lose your head and to make sure to take care of yourself physically. Have you ever had a moment in your career where you were about to lose your head? I would imagine it not to be easy to stay grounded all the time considering that you are on stage in front of so many people and practically feeling sort of on top of the world for those moments when you play…
For sure it happened to me, but life and time are always here to bring you back to reality. It is important for longevity in this industry.
When you grew up you were listening to hiphop. Do you still listen to that a lot nowadays?
Yes and I still buy a lot of records! Oldskool from the 90s most of the time, my collection is getting really nice…
You also hold close ties to the fashion industry – as a part time model and also composing music and soundtracks for designers such as Thierry Mugler, Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood, Agnes B etc. When you see a collection do you immediately feel the music to it or how do you approach these sort of collaborations?
Yes, it´s really easy for me to feel what music will fit. Doesn’t matter what the style of music is, and I really enjoy composing music without explicitly having the dancefloor at the forefront of my thoughts. The difficulty most of the time is to have full freedom – most of the time the designer has their own ideas (which don’t tend to be great most of the times!)
You also model. Do you feel the fashion industry is very different to the music scene? Like the way people act, the mood etc…
Not really actually. Almost the same vibe, with one underground scene and also a commercial one. Similarly to the music industry, there is a very small amount of people controlling the whole business. And there is all the sex, house music, the drugs and the travelling!
Do you feel a sort of pressure to be on all social networks nowadays in order to be accepted and heard as an artist? Or is it something you enjoy doing anyway?
It’s a little too much as many people have to invent a new life for themselves! Personally, I like it, it allows me to see a lot of the music, street art, dance , and other creative videos and enterprises that really interest me. So I like it for sure but it has to be balanced.
You also post quite openly about smoking and stuff. Ever got in trouble for that?
I post regularly about smoking, and yes as I think it should be legal everywhere now! I think it should be controlled in the way alcohol is.
You love basketball and Gorillas right? What else do you have a soft spot for?
Yes a lot!!! I also love records, toys, paintings, designs, neon lights, fetish gear and sport in general.
Revealing’s for Ibiza 2015?
Circoloco season at dc 10 – can’t wait for another season as resident of the best club in the world!
Most important thing in life?
Love – always.
