Chelsee Ivan has a neat eye for particulars. The Toronto based photographer catches a whole raft of melancholy within single moments and motifs that are preoccupied in thoughts. A quiescently pulchritude that can sometimes cause more stir than something rantingly obvious.
How would you describe your work?
I like to think my work often carries the feelings of loneliness and despondency but with a little bit of magic peeking through.
You are born in Alberta but currently living in Toronto. Where is home for you? And what you do you love about Toronto?
I’m still undecided about where home is. My hometown no longer feels like home but driving on the highways in Alberta still does, it’s what I feel the most homesick for. I love the amount of neighbourhoods there are in Toronto and a seemingly never ending amount of new places to find.
What, besides photography draws your interest?
Music, curation, self publishing and collaboration.
What music could apply to your work?
The kind of music that has a touch of chilliness. I find that airy synth music tends to give me that sort of shiver, in particular the Radio Dept.
The four most important things in life?
Friends who can make you laugh, lots of sunlight, being okay alone and a safe bed.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
Continuing to make photographs and (hopefully) constantly improving.
