“To see our fans happy makes us the happiest girls in the world! Aside from our love of music, our fans are what really keep us motivated and are the reason we continue to do what we love.” tells us Australian DJ, producer and songwriter duo Liv and Mim, better known as NERVO.
Their latest single release “It Feels” out of their forthcoming debut artist album ‘Collateral’ reminds us about this carefree summer months and that falling-in-love-feeling, that you never want to let go off. And it feels good. So we had a chat with the two pretty and successful sisters, who appeared in the highest female ranking of all times in the DJ Mag Top 100 poll, about raising the bar, their time as models and about their first heartbreak.
Hi Liv, Hi Mim. Describe each other in 3 words.
Liv: Bold, free and true.
Mim: Fun, crazy, energetic.
There is an amazing energy between the two of you also when you are on stage. Besides really getting the crowd to dance you also spread good vibes and smiles. How do you calm down after so much of euphoria during a gig?
It’s hard to calm down! It doesn’t matter how many times we play, the crowd’s energy is always the biggest adrenaline rush for the both of us. The “calm down” part usually takes place in our hotel room when we get back from the gig. We might take a bath or Skype someone overseas to say goodnight.
I heard you both like to party wild as well. What has been the craziest party lately?
Oh man, there have been too many crazy nights to list. We ended up having a pretty crazy party when we were in Madrid recently. It was the night before we were shooting a commercial for Ballantine’s so it probably wasn’t the best idea but nevertheless it was good fun. We ended up going to a flamenco show and then bar hopping around the town.
What´s your secret of looking so gorgeous despite working hard and therefore probably not sleeping that much?
Hydrate! We love hydrating drinks like coconut water and juices, never sugary or caffeine sodas. And we always wash our makeup off at night! We try not to wear too much makeup during the day to let our skin breathe.
So back to your music; you are currently one of the most successful female DJ´s. I was actually now trying to google the rank about the most popular female artists in the electronic scene and all that I got offered was links to the hottest female DJs. Do you sometimes face prejudices in that sense, that people say that you are more popular because of your looks rather than coz of your music?
Overall, no. We don’t let our gender get in the way of our career and we’ve always tried to let our music pave the way. Although, dance music is quite “male dominated,” females within the scene are gaining a lot of recognition lately. There are so many great female producers out there like Maya Jane Coles, Miss Kittin, Annie Mac and so many more. Good music is good music whether you’re a male or female!
I was quite impressed to read that you had been accepted at the Opera Australia Academy but decided to go for the electronic rail. Is classical music still something though that you would listen to at home nowadays?
We have been learning and playing music since we were kids so after we finished all the levels in voice and piano, the next step was to audition for musicals and plays etc. We did get accepted but never performed as we were seventeen at the time and were beginning to get more into other genres like pop music and house. We love and listen to all types of music for inspiration, anything from Phoenix to Imogen Heap to Gorgon City.
“We don’t let our gender get in the way of our career and we’ve always tried to let our music pave the way. Good music is good music whether you’re a male or female!”
You wrote or co-wrote songs for some really big names already. David Guetta, Kesha, Britney Spears, Pussycat Dolls, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, Ashley Tisdale, Rachel Stevens and so on. It must be amazing to see that you go down so well with the public and other artists. But does it also get more difficult now as maybe after a success we tend to raise the bar higher and higher for ourselves? Or are you quite easy going and confident in the sense that you think it will all just go the right way and you don’t put yourself under any pressure?
We are always trying to push each other and ourselves. The bar is raised higher but it is not others raising it for us, we raise it for ourselves. We love what we do and wouldn’t want to do anything else.
A good song needs to…
Feel fresh! Originality in the Sonics and also top line (vocals/melody.) A lot of producers are pushing boundaries and exploring different sounds within dance music; it makes it a very exciting time to be a producer and a fan!

One of your all-time favorite electronic track?
When Love Takes Over – David Guetta ft. Kelly Rowland
Despite music –what makes you happy?
Our fans! To see our fans happy makes us the happiest girls in the world! Aside from our love of music, our fans are what really keep us motivated and are the reason we continue to do what we love.
Melbourne versus London. What makes each place special? What do you miss in each one about the other?
Melbourne is where our family is from! We miss them all the time when we are on the road traveling. Thank God for Skype and telephones. London is so much fun for us, always! We have so many friends who live in London. There is always a reunion with friends when we go home. We get excited every time we get to visit both cities, they are both so lovely in their own way.
Best memories from your time as models?
Our best modeling moment would have to be when we saw our faces all over Walgreens with CoverGirl. Or when we see ourselves on a billboard in Ibiza or Vegas. It still trips us out!
Last time you cried?
Liv: When I watched “The Lion King,” which was about a week or two ago! I love that movie but cry every time!
Mim: I cry on every long haul flight. I like to watch the soppy movies.
First heart-break?
Mim: When I was sixteen years old. I thought I was going to marry the guy!
Liv: Yikes. I’ve had a few now. The worst one was with an English guy who I definitely thought was “the one.” Thankfully, now I just think there can be many “ones.” :)
One of your cutest childhood memories together?
Sleeping in each other’s beds when one of us used to wet the bed. We must have been around four years old but can still vividly remember jumping into bed with each other in the middle of the night. We used to strip the bed and then jump into bed with wet pajamas.
“You wanna join the revolution?” you two asked your crowd in one of your gigs I have just watched. Is it important for you to also spread a message with your music?
Absolutely! We are so passionate about our music and our message! We hope to inspire just as others have inspired us. Go for your dream, whether it be to make music or something else – be confident in your talents and abilities and the possibilities are endless!
