On its seventh edition, the music wing of Northside Festival took over Brooklyn’s trendiest boroughs – Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Bushwick – to showcase nearly 400 bands from all over the planet. From brand new names to more well established acts, the all-ages event entertained an eager crowd with a four-day weekend of good food and fantastic music, officially marking the beginning of summer.
In spite of the blazing heat, both New Yorkers and out of towners gathered at the outdoor stages of McCarren Park, 50 Kent and Williamsburg Walks, and several other venues across the neighborhood, to watch some of their favorite musicians play live. The event was not limited to music; in a sxsw fashion, the festival also held film and innovation showcases during the course of the week. By the time the weekend arrived, the sun was shinning and the streets of Brooklyn were packed with people and vendors of all kinds and sizes, bringing New York finally out of hibernation.
Some of the most memorable shows include, Viet Cong, Rhye, Built To Spill, Run The Jewells, Ex Hex, Jacco Gardner and Against Me! And it was great to see so many fabulous women on stage as well; from younger sweethearts like Sunflower Bean’s Julia Cummings, Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, Alvvays’ Molly Rankin, Brooklyn’s Mitski, and the Austalian girl trio Little May, to more seasoned chicks like Sleigh Bells’ Alexis Krauss, Zola Jesus and Neko Case, hundreds of ladies showed up to prove that the male-only days in the music industry are long gone.
