“Most Asian students learn the same thing until high school. That being so makes it difficult to have a variety of ways of thinking.”
starts Choe More, a Seoul, South Korea based photographer, when we ask him about the difference between European and Asian aesthetics when it comes to photography. The self-taught artist would like people to feel something when they look at his work. Mission achieved we would say. And what we feel is a strong sense of nostalgia and a lot of beauty wrappred within this Asian calmness and love for details.
What do you want to capture in your pictures? Emotions, stories? Or just something visually appealing?
I want to try to remember this moment that I capture. So it´s about moments, about remembering and about feeling. When people look at my pictures and feel something, wether it´s sadness or happiness then I would like that.
One your favorite images out of your work and why?
This is my favorite image. I’m a very contradictory person. I also like fantasy movies and I try to pursue unreal things within reality. What makes a surrounding look beautiful is light, colour and people. When looking at this picture I feel endlessness.
How do social networks influence your work? How important are those “likes” you receive for your images? And do you think that in general we put too much importance to that nowadays?
Through sns, my picture are seen by many people. So that is only way also to be seen by foreigners. Also if this wouldn´t exist I wouldn´t have had the opportunity to do an interview with you guys. However “likes” don´t matter, it´s just a way to see what people prefer. Sometimes I am disappointed though to see that the images I like best are not the ones that others seem to think it´s their favorite. So sns are not a bad thing, just when you overdue it. Nowadays people seem to spend too much time with it.
What´s the difference between Asian and European aesthetics in photos?
Most Asian students learn the same thing until high school. That being so makes it difficult to have a variety of ways of thinking. I also think for the aesthetic inspiration natural landscapes are very important and I feel that maybe in Asia this is not as good as in Europe. Nevertheless there is a certain mood in Asian images.
Are you self-taught?
Yes, and I learned from other fields of art as well. Such as music, movie and writing; anything that evokes feelings has lead me to learn more about my own art as well.
Since the topic of our latest print issue is about love, I´d like to add a question related to that to you. When did you last fell head over heels in love with someone?
I am waiting for someone to appear.
