Pauline is lifestyle photographer from Lyon, France. She brings us into her world as she adventures around NYC and Texas for the summer – late nights in Manhattan, roadtripping in Texas, peering off the Empire State and fragile moments in the morning and night.
Where do you look for inspiration?
I am inspired by daily life. I am fascinated by people around me–my friends or even strangers in the street or train. I like to observe their expressions, their feelings. It sounds weird but I can watch them for hours–human expressions are fascinating. I wish had my camera instead of eyes to capture every moment. I am also inspired by traveling around the world. When I travel with my camera, I try to immortalize what I see and my discoveries during my trip.
Do you feel like you have different perspective from where you grew up in the east of France?
Hm, I don’t think so. Everyone has their own perspective in life and I don’t think it’s based on where you grew up or where you from. I recognize the differences between some of my friends but it’s not that apparent. I want to discover the world, people and other cultures. I love to live on the road and some of my friends are happy with staying where they are born. So yeah that’s life, just choose what makes you happiest and I choose mine.
What do you love most about the US?
I lived in NYC for three months and actually I only knew about that part of the US but I had time to observe a lot of things. I like how open-minded people are. You can dress however you want no matter what people think. In the US, people are friendlier, always hugging, and it’s easy to meet someone on the train or in a bar and spend the rest of the night together even though you were just strangers an hour ago.
If you could travel anywhere to photography where would you be and why?
Hard question haha. I think I will choose South America first. I really want to discover the culture there as it is different to mine. All I need is a simple trip with a car, maybe trains or even horses. Landscapes there are so rich and extremely varied. You can be in a desert one day and the next in lush mountains. People there are also very interesting– I would love to discover their backgrounds. I imagine my pictures turning out very colorful. I’m not really worried when I can make the trip but I wish one day I have the ability photograph it.
How old/how did you get into photography?
I started being interested in photography since I was a child. I remember getting my first camera at 10 years old–an old Canon. I love taking pictures to immortalize every moment, even if the outcomes on film were bad, I didn’t care. As I grew up around the age of 17 and traveled, I became more and more interested in photography. I started my blog in 2014 and from then on I met people who inspired and encouraged me. It’s a good way to share memories and meet people.
How is photographing people in the US different to France?
It’s easier in the US to ask people for their picture to be taken–they are more open. You just have to say « Hey, I’m french, I’m a photographer, would I be able to your picture ? ». It’s pretty easy maybe because I’m french, haha actually I don’t know.
What is most surprising you feel about USA?
Sounds cliché, but I think it’s the « American Dream ». You just need to prove yourself and someone might give you a chance. You mustn’t give up. It’s pretty easy–if you really want something you have the ability to fight for it. A good meeting, a good friend and you can create inspiring work together.
