“I’m currently going through a weird period of my life. I’m really happy, probably the happiest I’ve been in years, but at the same time there’s this pressure to grow up looming over me – all my friends have real jobs that pay actual money and here I am fooling around with a freakin’ camera.”
Slovenian photographer and music journalist Jaka Bulc who has done work for brands such as Poler, Herschel and VSCO, has just returned from a trip to the Pacific Northwest and now delivers a bunch of fresh and analogue photographs representing his further love for non-commercial work. And for living those moments of romanticism on road trips that make you feel like you are unconquerable.
“It was the end of summer and I still had some money left over in my bank account so I decided to escape the dilemmas and tribulations of everyday life and head over to the United States with a bunch of my friends. I know that America gets a lot of flak from a lot of people these days but I’m a huge fan of its cities and natural riches so I’m always super-happy to visit there. We headed for the national parks of the Pacific Northwest and squeezed in Yellowstone and the Tetons as well, while we obviously also had to stop in Seattle, Boise and Portland for the stupendously good record stores and wonderful restaurants. I was really glad that I hadn’t planned any specific photo projects for the trip. This way I was able to snap away as I pleased and the pure act of immortalizing a moment through a photograph reminded me why I started taking photographs in the first place. This might not be the most monetizable form of photography and it’s usually perceived as superfluous in this utilitarian world we live in, but it’s also, for those very same reasons, a tool that helps us stop the wheels of the big cruel machine for a moment or two. I think a 9 to 5 job will have to wait for now, I’ll fool around some more while I still can.”
