Sometimes it feels like for the new generation the whole world evolves around themselves. But we all know that those things can easily just be a prejudice coming from previous generations and in fact if you take a closer look it is not true at all. And even if you might think that taking self-portraits has been invented not so long ago, it is a form of art that has been existing for quite a while now, going back as far as to the ancient times. The self-portrait as a confrontation of one’s self, one’s own existence and the subject´s own mortality. Jennifer Medina captured different moments of her life by using a selfie-stick and edited a video called “my self” and it enchants us with amazing aesthetics and profound insight into a young person´s mind.
“I never saw myself owning a selfie stick, when they came out people around me as well as the media would talk negatively of it, but I got one as a gift very recently so I began wondering what could I do to make the most of it? I started filming little scenes of my every day life for three days. I would be hanging out with friends and I’d remember to take it out and I would shoot a little bit with the front camera of my iPhone. I recorded myself as well as expressing my thoughts and questions I wonder about and put snippets of it in the video as well. It felt more personal to speak in Spanish as it’s my first language, being from Venezuela, so basically this little video I made is like entering my life and going inside my head.
For me the selfie generation is an artistic movement of the youth, it’s a way of curating your life. Everyone is concerned with beauty, and the media enables and gives us a filtered perception of beauty. And it isn’t only about beauty, selfies are also a way you want for people to see the way you lead your life. You can determine how people think of you with the way you take a selfie, it’s the new first impression.
I now couldn’t see myself without a selfie stick, they are so fun and silly.”
