„There will always be better. There will always be smarter. There will always be cooler. There will never be another you.“
The instagram account of Matt Adam is called Come feel me. Which already describes pretty well the work of the young and talented Toronto origin photographer. While others easily defer to photographic trends and at times cross the border of simply being inspired by the works of other, he cut his own path and tries to create apart from mainstream. Therefore his images carry his thumbprint that in turn serves as an inspiration for other photographers. Oh, by the way we are incredible proud that Matt shot the cover of our last print issue starring Amina Blue and have now spoken to him about how it was to work with Amina, being inspired by the place where feelings meet the surrounding and about role models, addiction and not getting enough sleep.
You photograph stunning girls. How do you define beauty?
Beauty is perception. For me it has always been about energy and personality. I look for unique features and someone who would work great for whatever vision I have at that time.
How was working with Amina Blue for our Summer issue?
It was awesome. She’s not only stunning but such a cool person as well. We vibed, walked around the city, talked about Toronto and how the city has shaped such a unique and groundbreaking style from artists who grew up there. I’m really looking forward to shooting with her again in the future.
How did this collaboration come about?
I was going to NYC and I just hit her up and was like let’s shoot. I was a fan of the content she was putting out and I’m glad she felt the same. I’m never scared of rejection and I never force creativity. I think those are important.
Who else would you like to photograph?
I have a lot of people in my sights and have some really cool shoots set up for the future but I’m going to keep those details to myself for now.
Are you self-taught?
Yes, fully. I bought my first camera just over tww years ago. My camera is pretty much my right hand. I’ve been in love with photography since I was a child but never had the confidence to try it because I was always told I had to go to school for it. Apparently not :)
You have a very fresh approach in taking pictures and seeing interesting angles of the subjects and objects you photograph. Therefore they stand out amongst the tons of images we see every day. How did you develop your style?
Whether it’s painting canvases, drawing or taking pictures, I’m inspired by the place where those feelings meet my surroundings. I spent most of my childhood and teenage years in libraries and bookstores looking at magazines, comic books, anime, or anything that inspired my creativity as a visual artist. As I got older, I started to get inspired by the things in my surrounding environments, and since I grew up in downtown Toronto, I was exposed to different cultures, but it was underground cultures like skating and graffiti that opened my eyes to the idea that beauty is in unexpected places.
What are your next steps for your career?
I’m excited by the physicality of art, and hope to see more of my work printed in physical form as I continue to pursue my dream of travelling the world and creating inspiring images for a living. I want to work with big companies and magazines and look forward to whatever the future has in store for me. A year ago I would have never thought I would be where I am now.
We love your captions on instagram. So we thought to do a little questionaire related to them.
„Bad habits never die.“ Your bad habits?
Not getting enough sleep. Sometimes I’ll stay up for days without sleep because I get so involved and obsessed with whatever I’m working on.
„Everyone wanna be a model. Nobody wanna be a role model.“ Do you have a role model in your life?
My role model is my brother because not only do I look up to him I know he looks up to me. He keeps me in check.
„What’s your addiction baby?“ You are addicted to…
I’m addicted to music, creating, painting, taking pictures, having unforgettable moments in life, and anything extreme.
„Make no mistakes.“ Anything you regret in your professional career so far?
I live life with no regrets. I think it’s important to learn from your mistakes and just move on. Don’t waste energy on things you can’t control.
„I wish I was a kid all over again.“ Best childhood memory?
I don’t really remember much of my childhood but I remember my Dad taking me to his work when I was little and gave me tracing paper so I could trace the drawings in comic books. That’s what got me into drawing and I’m thankful for that.
„There will always be better. There will always be smarter. There will always be cooler. There will never be another you.“ The thing you love most about yourself?
In this day and age it’s hard to love yourself.
