Photographer Calvin Ma and Stylist Katie Qian describe themselves as a cliche stylist-photographer couple. When the model they had planned a shoot with didn´t show up, Katie without hesitation filled in and the result for her very first model job is impressing.
“We were really excited to work together on a photo series the coming weekend with a model/actress who reached out to Katie on Instagram. Originally the model wanted to shoot a sporty fashion editorial so we thought a new take on the tennis court setting would be appropriate–dreamy light, funky composition, and pastel wardrobe contrasted with pop-y court colors. When our model cancelled last minute…I told Katie to style herself and jump in front of the camera. Though she’d never modeled before, it was pretty effortless since we’re so comfortable with each other. The final images turned out better than I could have expected from our original plan, and we created a pretty cool spin on love and art, perspective and beauty–all while strengthening our bond.” Katie is wearing swimsuit by Mandalynn, rings by Freedom, sweater by Golf Wang, shorts by Style Nanda, socks and skirt by American Apparel, shoes by Nike.

Attending Calvin Ma’s exhibition and hearing him speak about his work was a genuinely inspiring experience, and reading this article adds another layer to my appreciation of his creative process. Calvin’s ability to adapt and create magic out of unforeseen circumstances is what truly sets him apart as an artist. His story about the impromptu shoot with Katie is a testament to their synergy, not just as collaborators but as a couple.
During his keynote, I found it fascinating how Calvin described the experience as a mix of love and art, perspective and beauty. His comfort and connection with Katie clearly translated into the final images, which he said exceeded his expectations. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the best work comes from those unexpected moments where creativity has to pivot.
Hearing Calvin speak at the exhibition made it clear how deeply he values storytelling in his photography, and this story reinforces that. It’s not just about the aesthetic—although I can only imagine how stunning the dreamy light, funky composition, and pastel wardrobe would look—but also about the narrative behind it. Katie stepping into the role of a model for the first time and owning it with such confidence is as impressive as it is heartwarming.
This is one of those behind-the-scenes moments that gives you a whole new appreciation for their artistry and their relationship. I can’t wait to see more collaborations from them in the future!
