“I’ve seen so many people who called themselves fashion designers and know nothing about basic knowledge of constructing garments and I personally think that’s ridiculous”
Designer and model Bei photographed and interviewed by Danny Lane
You’re so cool looking. Where are you from?
Thank you! You are awesome! I am from Taiwan, moved to NY three years ago.
What is your profession?
Fashion Designer.
What kind of clothing do you make?
I do both – men’s and woman’s wear. And I’ve been thinking about making a lingerie collection. You can find some of my works here: tomorrowistheendoftheworld.com
What are you wearing right now?
A extra large yellow M&M’s chocolate jacket with patches all over the place and wearing my hair like Chun-Li.
Do you model a lot?
Not really. I sometimes model for money when I am very poor, and sometimes model for free when it´s a fun project. But now I try to build up my portfolio.
What are you working on at the moment?
Working on a design project with photographer Danny Clinch who shot all the legendary hip-pop artists, such as Tupac, Nas, ODB, Beastie Boys…And also some side projects with my friends, hopefully we can come up with a collection in 2016.
If you could give young designers advice, what would it be?
Fundamental knowledge is the key. I’ve seen so many people who called themselves fashion designers and know nothing about basic knowledge of constructing garments and I personally think that’s ridiculous. Everyone can come up with cool concept but in the end of day it’s all about how you put your ideas together and turn it into a real design. It’s like someone call himself a photographer but doesn´t know how to use a camera. And find yourself a business partner who you trust the most. There are only very few designers in the world who can both be the creative director and CEO of the company. Last, if you don’t have money and want to have your own label…maybe find yourself a sugar daddy first?
If you win the lottery, what will you do?
I don’t know…get a green card? Probably give some money to my parents. Oh and use those money start a company and do my own thing.
What’s the strangest thing that has happened to you recently?
Having a family dinner with Nicola Formichetti, it’s a video for Nicopanda. I played as Nicola’s daughter in the video and it was super fun, crazy and one of the most beautiful project that I have ever done! You have to watch it!
Drink of choice?
I kinda rather get high instead of getting drunk.
What are your friends like?
They are all very chilled and weird.
Can you copy something random from the internet real quick and paste it here?

Can you say a couple things about our shoot?
We shot at the apt that me and my boyfriend temporary stay. It is a two floor apt with a basement in Manhattan, very cool apt with lots of space. For some reason, I remember you wore a blood red Versace sweatshirt. I usually get a bit shy when meeting new people, but during the shoot, I felt like I was talking to a friend that I’ve already kinda knew.
Can we shoot again soon?
Sure!!!
