A great photograph?
“The atmosphere that moves something inside the viewer, that makes him fly with imagination, feel emotions or think about something.”
When I discovered the pictures of Marta Bevacqua, I immediately immersed into another world. A surreal world. The young photographer creates unique images that will make you want to observe them for more than just a brief look and furthermore will cast a spell over you. The main focus is on women and nature, the beauty of details such as freckles and they excude a deep desire.
Which song people should listen to while reading this interview?
I will give 3 choices, if you don’t mind. Surface to air – The Chemical Brothers / Crystal Ball – Grimes / A new error – Moderat
Thanks, I think we will choose Moderat for now:) You first picked up a camera at the age of 16. Do you remember the first photo you ever took?
Unfortunately I can´t remember exactly… I remember I started with flowers and plants. I loved taking pictures of rain drops on the grass, or on the nude branches of the trees. I started with things like that and only after some time I started taking photos of people (using my sisters and myself as models).
What makes a great photograph?
The atmosphere that moves something inside the viewer, that makes him fly with imagination, feel emotions or think about something.
Your images transmit so much beauty, creativity and deepness. How would you describe your own work?
I think it’s quite dreamy, a bit surreal and storytelling. I love telling stories with my photos, stories that everyone can imagine.
Do you take your camera everywhere you go?
I did it until some years ago. Now I work quite a lot, and sometimes I really need a break. That’s why sometimes I love travelling without the camera, and just enjoy the beauty everywhere using only the eyes. I can’t hide the fact that it happened that moments came up when I really wanted the camera with me, but when I think about those situations, I’m quite happy I could just watch and notice everything without being distracted for taking a photo. Inspiration is not there every time, at least for me. And it’s from the breaks that I can find it again. So no, I don’t take my camera everywhere, but only when I feel I need it.
Once you said “I read a lot, books are like my air. I also write, a bit slowly…” Writing versus photography – is a picture really worth a thousand words?
Yes, that’s it! Especially since I try telling stories with my photos, this sentence really represents my way to photograph. But imagining a lot of things just from some words, instead of the images, is something special. I really wish I could write more.
You have already answered a lot of interview questions before. Which question should we have asked you?
Maybe which photos represent me at the best, I but hey… I might not be able to answer :-D
Ok yeah – so what single photo would you choose to represent you? And why?
Well, it’s very difficult. I have so many photos I can choose, but maybe I would choose a very old one. It’s a self-portrait, and it really represents me. It tells my stories, it describes my vision of photography and it’s me, in all the senses. The title is “The reader” and it’s this one:
Do you think that each one can change the world or are we all just small fish in a big ocean?
I think both things are true. Yes, we are small fishes in a big ocean, but also a small fish can change the world.
Last moment of total happiness? And what makes you sad ?
Seeing the northern lights. And about sadness: knowing and realizing some things are gone and will never be back.
The most important thing in life is?
Love. Every kind of love. And I have no doubt about it.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
Around the world, never in the same place.
