“I get people commenting on these photos like “horse photo shoots are the best” and it just makes me laugh. This was hardly a horse photoshoot. And definitely not a trail ride lmao. More like plan to go on a ride with mum, secretly shove a few outfits in my backpack with my camera, and then force mum to take pics of me right before we head back.” tells Kyra Wilchuck and what she says makes me laugh as well. Because it is exactly what I was initially thinking when I saw those stunning images: That horse shoots are the best.
But apparently this specific day was one of the craziest days and rides she has had in a while so Kyra tell-tales about the whole experience. “We made the mistake of taking two babies, instead of having one trained horse to teach the other. They were fine for the first bit, it’s about a 2 hr ride to the river and you have to go down a long extremely steep hill, all fun stuff. We get down there and after they play in the water for a bit we tie them to some trees so we can look for rocks in the river. I hear Emale freaking out so I run back up and sure enough Ez is just gone. I yell back to mum that Ez is gone and run up the ridiculously steep hill to see her galloping back and forth in this farmers field, luckily she was trapped in by the tree line. I yell at her and she stops to stare at me. I’m like “good she sees me, she’ll come to me now”. Nope. She starts galloping away from me and I literally have to chase her through this alfalfa field until she finally gives in.
Now I have to lead her down the crazy steep hill because we took off their tack at the river. So the whole time I’m just like ‘if this giant horse falls on me and we both roll down the hill omg’, because she keeps slipping on the rocks right behind me. Finally we get down alive and mum and Emale are all ready to come look for us. This is when I force mum to take pics of me in the river with the pones and it was all fun again. They played in the water and were so well behaved. A boat came by and created huge waves which they had never seen before, so they started acting kind of scary, but other than that they were great.
We ride up the crazy steep hill, at this point Ez is so tired that there were times I didn’t think she was going to make it up. On the pretty trail again, this place is like a fairytale. Mum and I keep going on about how Emale would never leave us like Ez did, how he’s loyal…. we get to the pasture that we passed on the way in, with the cutest mintature horses and one big Clydesdale. They made me cry they were so cute. But of course the babies were terrified of them, because that’s totally rational, to be terrified of something that is literally just a tiny version of you. But whatever, mum was like “good teaching moment” and we get the babies to go up and sniff their little noses. Emale is being so brave going right up to these small horses, and it seems fine. Ez is shaking like crazy underneath me, hiding behind Emale. All of a sudden in the distance we see the last mini horse galloping excitedly towards us (which is the cutest thing you will ever see btw) and that was the limit. Emale loses it. He does the craziest stallion move I’ve ever seen, stands completely straight in the air. Mum decides to bail because he begins to lean to one side and could possibly roll on her. As soon as mum hits the ground Emale takes off as fast as he can.
Ez does the same thing but not as extreme, rearing and standing up on her hind legs like a stallion. She has done that when I was riding her before, I honestly thought I was going to stay on but I just fell off lmao. Mum grabs her and we start walking back. She’s like an angel now. 2 people driving passed stopped to grab Emale but he was too crazy. One woman said he had the craziest look in his eye like he had just seen a ghost. I was like ‘ya a miniature horse ran towards him’… So this woman drives me up the road to show me where she last saw him go, shows me where his saddle must have fell off because he didn’t have it on when she saw him. Mum rides Ez along and I call my stepdad to come grab me. We look up and down the road for the saddle and finally find all the pieces of it distributed along the ditch, luckily even my mums phone still in the saddle bag. So we drive towards home assuming he was probably headed there and sure enough, we see him tied up at the pony club arena, right before our yard. There was an event there so the pony club moms were able to grab him and tie him up. Mum and Ez somehow beat us there. I go to grab the sweat drenched horse and he somehow breaks away one last time. All the mums start freaking out scrambling to grab him. I grab him and laugh “don’t worry he’s honestly not dangerous like he’s making himself look right now”. We walk home in peace. I loved this day, the whole thing was just so funny to me. AndIi love the babies so much, no matter how rotten they can be. So this is why I laugh when people think this was a horse photo shoot!” All photographed by Carla Wilchuck and bathing suit top and skirt by Kyra Made.
