Describing herself as an incorrigible life-lover, tropical gangster and kitty mother the young and wild Brooklyn Martell loves doing sports (her workout / handstand instagram images are so super motivating), good healthy food, traveling around lovely places and sometimes standing behind the camera for a fun photoshoot. The world can´t have enough of this women power and positive energy vibes.

What do you love most about yourself?
I’ve always had this joyful, candid, unwavering desire and strength to make friends. I’ve noticed through the years my peers becoming closed off to new people because of past hurts, causing skepticism. I’ve somehow maintained this uncanny ability to always expect the best from people, and to open myself to new relationships without any hesitation. This is not to say I’ve not experienced AWFUL fall outs from unhealthy people, but I have this relentless and painstaking Pollyanna approach to people. I’m also won over quite easily by apologies/amends. Kind of like the Morrissey, “It takes strength to be gentle and kind”. Yeah, this is what I love about myself.
I feel that the industry is sending us from one beauty standard to the next, making us believe that they want to improve society but are rather interested in selling us a product; that comes nicely wrapped in a “beauty redefining movement” or “a sort of political correctness”. F.e. Women with curves = real women – But what if mother nature has forgotten to give you some assets on this part? What do you think about that theme?
My heart breaks over these ridiculous “real women, ________” Why do we feel the need to empower/ ridicule people on things they have no real control over, like the placement of curves on a body? There are so many things women have control over and have real value that we can choose to fawn over and compliment, like raising really powerful children, or having an impact on the city council.

What makes a person beautiful in your eyes?
My two favorite traits: Kindness and consideration. This indicates a specific type of intelligence and beauty to me.
Do you have any tattoos?
Yes. My best friend and I were just drunk teenagers when we went in to a shop in Hollywood get matching diamonds tattooed on our ring fingers. I also have a Lotus on my forearm, which was a gift to myself for my two year anniversary of sobriety, by Norm, one of my long time favorite artist since I was a kid.

Generation selfie: Is Social Media (Instagram and co) creating a generation of narcissists?
It´s certainly a contributor. Self promotion (absorption?) is being rewarded more so now than any other time in history it seems. Post a picture of my cat, and people don’t have many comments to leave me. Post a picture of my mostly bare skin and I suddenly have all this “human interaction” and the circuitry firing in my brain tells me, “That’s rewarding, repeat this behavior! I dig the feels!” I think it’s important to keep sight of intrinsic values especially when indulging in the outer locus of worth to maintain balance.
Your biggest life lesson so far?
That my life is my own design. Its daunting- but even more so, it’s wildly empowering. I’ve learned to create my own opportunities. This comes from taking the extra step. Piecing together adventures. Exerting myself. Networking. Life doesn’t hand you anything. The things I want will pass me by if I don’t demand and grab it. My mom always says “squeaky wheel gets the oil”.

What do you expect from life?
I’ve not thought on this….
My best friend describes me as….
Her words verbatim, “someone always up for an adventure. Someone I could rely on to tell me the bold truth if I asked for an opinion. Someone always willing to try the new vegan restaurant in town. Someone willing to go to yoga or some acro thing majiger”.
My ideal Sunday morning consists of..
Skateboarding to the neighborhood donut shop with my neighbors. Coffee bar hopping. Checking out my favorite vintage shops on Main.
My biggest dream is…
Having some type of non-profit drug and alcohol treatment. I spent much of my teen and early 20’s in treatment, and have so many fond memories of the staff members and having a feeling of comfort and safety in rehab… I’d like to provide this experience to others.
“I’ve learned to create my own opportunities. This comes from taking the extra step.”
My favorite food…
Oh lord. I love SO MUCH FOOD. Thai. Or Mediterranean from a dive-y hookah lounge. Salmon nigiri with LOTS of wasabi sends me into a frenzy and I often get goosebumps from eating it. SUCH an experience.
My favorite book…
Of all time? The Giving Tree, by Shel Silverstein. Also, The Seat of the Soul, by Gary Zukav.
My favorite place to be…
I just love to be home… My parents home, on the North Shore of Oahu- hangin’ with my family.
