“The Human Condition”, “Observed” and “Gone Fishin” are the three categories on Nicholas Wilkie´s website; phrases that make the viewer curious about what´s hidden behind them. Quite generally Nick has the knack of awakening people´s curiosity with interesting angles and perspectives in his photographs, that make you feel like you are standing right in front of the motive yourself. We inquired with the artist about his interesting path to photography and what gives an image longevity.
What is unique that’s not in your bio?
Hmmm, well I suppose the fact that I was a college wrestler and earned a degree in physical and environmental geography only to graduate and pursue a career as a full time photographer is somewhat unique haha.
When did you first pick up a camera?
I first picked up a camera back in 2014
Like anything in the world, photography has its fashions and trends. What gives an image longevity in your eyes?
To be honest, I have yet to figure that out completely, but if I had to make an educated guess I would say a photo that is real. An image that is not staged whatsoever, something that captures the pure essence of the subject, whether it be a portrait, landscape, or a street photo. An image that is so real, it takes you to another place mentally, thought provoking, makes you say “how” or “why?”.

What, besides photography draws your interest?
Martial Arts, Wrestling and music for sure, although I’m not very musically inclined myself haha. Anime/ Manga, I am a huge nerd for this stuff. Hiking/Camping, nothing beats getting out of the city and hitting some trails for the weekend.
And what are you spending your money on?
Food, rent, adventures and some damn good beer.
Who is the most important person in your life? My Mother
Favorite city? New York
What would you like to change in the world?
To implement better global sustainability practices.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself furthering my career as a photographer and ideally branching out and mastering alternative forms of visual art.
