“The track is capturing the feeling of a discotheque that used to be a place that created our first DJ’s and ultimately became a space for people who lived outside of societal norms to express themselves freely without judgement or condemnation.”
What an awesome track to dance to! And you really cannot sit still when putting on this rad song which was produced by the Austrian DJ & producer Fabian Luttenberger and features American songstress Jordan Corey, who is also a photographer and graphic designer. And while we simply cannot get enough of “Discotheque” we also had a chat with Fabian about role models, life-goal and favourite cities.
Fabian, tell us about the inspiration behind “Discotheque”?
When I started the track last year I laid down the main chord progression. I was looking for a singer when my friend recommended Jordan to me. She basically wrote the lyrics to fit the lush 70ies/80ies vibe the track has. The track is capturing the feeling of a discotheque that used to be a place that created our first DJ’s and ultimately became a space for people who lived outside of societal norms to express themselves freely without judgement or condemnation.
I read you love moving to new cities, where are you currently based?
I am currently based in my hometown, Graz. It’s a small but lively city with a great local music scene. Before that I lived in the US and in Germany (Berlin) and I am planning to move back to the US next year.
One of your favorite cities and why?
There are so many great cities I like to travel but one I really like is Barcelona. I love the warm climate, it’s old town, and that it’s located directly at the beach. I am going to a festival there in a few weeks, really looking forward to it.
“I really love experimenting with uncommon and new sounds and that fascination holds true until this day.”
You used to play in a few indie-bands – has electronic music always been in your back mind or how did you get into this genre at the end?
I started with a rock indie band and we experimented with adding some electronic elements to freshen up the music. It really fascinated me that electronic music offers indefinite possibilities on how you can shape a sound. I kept using those elements more and more in my music when I finally decided to just focus on producing electronic music. The great thing for me compared to playing in a band is that your sound is not limited by an instrument like for instance a guitar where you can only get a certain amount of sounds out of it. I really love experimenting with uncommon and new sounds and that fascination holds true until this day.
Who are your big role models within music business?
This changes almost every week. I currently listen to a lot of artists that play live sets like Bicep or Jacques Greene. I think having a really strong and though-through live performance is key to stick out of the producer crowd.
What music are you listening to get your day started?
I listen to a lot of different music. It feels like I have a infinite number of playlist’s with different genres saved on my Spotfiy. Lately I’ve been listening to cheesy 80ies classics straight when I wake up. It really helps to get the day going. I also have a Spotify playlist with the tracks I really dig that I update regularly.
So, originally you are from Austria, what would you say is very “Austrian”?
Austria is a small country and you can reach every corner within a few hours. It has a lot of mountains and lakes so it is great for doing activities outside. I guess having that living nature right next to you is very “Austrian”.
Your ultimate life-dream?
I want to keep traveling to as many different places in the world as possible, getting to know different cultures and continue to make music whenever I feel like it.
Last time you were thankful for something…
I am actually thankful for every day.
