We sat down with talented Costa Rica based photographer Josue Zuñiga to talk about creative process, challenges and camera equipment.
What moment made you fall in love with photography?
Despite having spent so much time in photography, I actually never thought about this. I have always liked taking pictures, it felt right, every step I took, using the camera and editing felt natural. My passion allowed me to grow and learn more and more but I think it was not until a critical moment in my life where I realized that no matter what is happening, if I have the camera in my hands the rest does not matter. That was the moment I realized that the very first time I took the camera I fell deeply in love with photography.
You have super beautiful potraits in your portfolio. What does your creative process look like?
I’m very inspired by Music. I love “Cigarettes After Sex” and “Beach House”, and although they inspire me to create my photos they do not necessarily have anything to do with the lyrics of their songs, I just find them fascinating and they allow me to think about what I want to do. I also like to improvise the ideas that I have, and share them with the model and just let the photoshoot flow.
“If I have the camera in my hands the rest does not matter”
What’s in your camera bag?
It’s funny because I still have my first camera, it’s a Rebel T3, and although I use a 50mm 1.8 I also like using the 18-55. I feel that people underestimate a lot what can be done with such a basic Equipment. I also have a Kodak KE30 Point and Shoot and a Polaroid Onestep2.
What are some favorite things about being a photographer? And what are some challenges you’ve encountered?
Definitely meeting new people and I think that my biggest challenge has been my camera equipment, but despite not having the best I have been able to achieve everything I’ve done till today with it.
What are three things you value most about a person?
Honesty, punctuality and empathy.
What´s the last book you read?
The truth is I am not a person who reads a lot, I prefer to write.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
Going out of Costa Rica is something I have been planning for a not so distant future, no matter where, I want to know new places and new people, have new opportunities and experiences.
Any question we should have asked you?
I can´t think of any (smiles)
The worlds needs more of… and less of…
The world needs more expression and less fear.
