We had a chat with the 21-year-old British producer Sonn about his new single, creative moments and the chance to have a fresh start.
How did you get interested in making music and what or who influenced you in your decision to become a musician?
I’ve always been interested in music and how people make their music from a young age. I’ve been playing drums since I was like 6 or so, and ended up playing in bands. For me a natural development from that was making my own music and wanting to let the world know what I had to say. I can’t say there was one particular person who influenced me to become a musician, it kinda just happened.
The song “These Days” is about…?
These days days is about getting caught up in a relationship so much that you lose touch on reality and find yourself in a headspace where that is all you can think about. Whether it being from a positive or negative standpoint, it’s about learning to balance these feelings so that it is manageable to still focus on other life endeavours.
T.Evann’s voice fits perfectly to the beautiful sound – how did the collaboration come about?
T.Evann and I met at a Boiler Room event in 2018 and we just stayed in contact. He was posting snippets of his music on instagram and I loved it so I hit him up to work and we’ve been great friends since. I think we wrote the song about a year ago now in our first writing session.
The track is out of your upcoming EP. Describe the vibe of the EP in three words.
Nostalgic, Euphoric, Honest.
In what situation or which place do you get your most creative moments for song-writing?
It tends to vary, I can usually write in most places I just have to have the inspiration for it and that is kind of random, but for example if I wrote a song at 4am it would sound completely different to a song I would write at 2pm.
“If I wrote a song at 4am it would sound completely different to a song I would write at 2pm.”
Do you have a musical role model?
I do not think so, I feel like I listen to so much music that I get inspired from many different places. But some of my favourite artists right now are James Blake, Toro y moi, Kllo and Emerson Leif.
What inspired you to make this short movie/video “rumours”?
I feel like my strongest senses are audio and visual and I wanted to portray a feeling with the visuals just the same as the music.
Where did you learn to move on or make a fresh start yourself?
When I first moved to the UK for school. For me it was a new country and a new environment, I decided it was a chance to refresh and have a new start.
Best thing about being young?
Having a young body and being able to move freely haha
Most difficult thing?
Not being taken seriously, for some reason young people’s opinions are disregarded a lot of the time, I can never wrap my head around that.
What would you have liked to achieve before you are 30?
This is a hard question, there’s a lot of small things but for me the biggest and most important achievement would be still being able to make music comfortably and enjoying myself while doing so.
Favourite movie and book?
Star wars lol, it’s a nostalgia thing. Honestly, I don’t really read as much as I probably should but “Thinking, Fast and Slow” by Daniel Kahneman, I enjoy reading about how the mind works.
Anything else you want to tell to the world?
My new song with T.Evann is out now and my EP “Something, Safe” Is out 28th of August! I cant wait for everyone to hear it!
