BETWEEN FRIENDS are back.
Brandon and Savannah Hudson have been making music together for pretty much their entire lives. Still just 23 and 21 years old respectively, the duo is absolutely rolling. Just last week they dropped their newest mixtape, tape 003. Succeeding tape 002 and tape 001, it’s perfectly at home with its predecessors, however the growth is evident, both sonically and thematically. From the pop sheen of “lonely” to the meandering musings of “down”, the best friends are opening up on all fronts – and somehow they’ve covered all this ground in under 10 minutes. So put those headphones on and take a mental smoke break. You might need it.

How does your relationship as brother and sister factor into your creative process as BETWEEN FRIENDS?
We are just so comfortable with each other that no idea is a bad idea. We start everyday like a blank canvas when we work and most times we get to our favorite ideas by continuously going back and forth until it’s a united product. Another bonus is the fact that we both have the same vision for this so we just work till we get it right.
This is your third tape in the series. How would you compare this release to the previous two tapes?
To us tape 003 is the rawest emotionally, it’s kinda like a tell all to some degree. Even though some songs are shorter than others we tried to pack as much in them.
What went into the decision to release music as a series of tapes?
Around the start of isolation in quarantine we found a big box in our garage filled with old music memorabilia that belonged to our parents. It had burned cassette tapes and walkman’s, CD’s by the dozen and old VHS concert tapes, the OG iPods. the feeling of discovering that was really fantastic. Seeing how everything we do nowadays is digital and on our phones we felt compelled to make a piece of music that felt like it was ripped straight off of an old CD but for the streaming world. We are also big fans of 1990s mixtape culture and the stories that came from making them, so we made our own.
“To us, that’s the point now. To have as much fun as possible and make the music that is naturally just BETWEEN FRIENDS”
What are some things you’ve learned about yourselves through the writing process of this latest batch of music?
This big chunk of creation has really taught us a lot about ourselves as a project. We spent some time after the release of our first EP ‘we just need some time together.’ to really understand what it was that we wanted to do and what we wanted to make. As soon as we got back into the studio though all of those thoughts went away and we just started creating anything and everything, and had the most fun of our lives doing it. To us, that’s the point now. To have as much fun as possible and make the music that is naturally just BETWEEN FRIENDS
How has growing up in LA influenced you musically?
LA is constantly moving and changing and I think that’s what is most inspiring to us. We are always on our toes and always trying to stay up.
Can you share more about the scene you’re involved in in LA and how you plug into your creative community?
There are creative communities everywhere you just have to find them around you. we spent years looking for them. The overall mission is always the same and that’s to impact the people around you with your own expression and with your creations.
What do you hope fans take away from the new music?
We hope that u like it and maybe get noise complaints from listening too loud <33
