Fresh off a sold out hometown show and a BBC Radio 1 debut, Liverpool’s Toy Car are back with their newest track, “Better Than Before.” Beneath proper drums and distortion is a yearning for humanity, says frontman Shaun Hough. “We are all human and we all make the same mistakes and can learn from them,” he remarks. It’s a poignant sonic groundswell of sorts that marries vigor with awareness, not dissimilar to how British alt compatriots like Biffy Clyro or Morning Parade have done so well before them. Paired with their previous single, “Rat Race,” “Better Than Before” is an exhibit of a group with a strikingly firm handle on who they are as musicians, and how to make a rock record the right way in 2023. While it’s rarer and rarer in the age of digital convenience, it seems the Liverpudlian five-piece are onto something not only worth sharing, but hearing as well.

“I wrote this song during an isolated part of my life in my studio flat in Liverpool, it was a way of expressing that we are all human and we all make the same mistakes and can learn from them.”
