“It’s 1987 and you’re heading to the beach to catch some afternoon rays before going to the games room for some ping pong with your pals. You dress in your hottest two-piece bikini, short shorts, and a visor for sun protection before jumping in your cherry-red 1965 Pontiac and driving down Sunset Strip. It’s a scorching Saturday in July and you’re feeling groovy.”
Inspired by the fashion and culture of Southern California in the 80’s, I envisioned a theme that represented the nostalgia of a decade of groove and pop. I styled the shoot with items that reflected the informal and funky era including pit viper sunglasses, neon visors and high socks. I imagined what a typical Southern California girl in the 80s would be doing on a Saturday, which is why I chose to shoot primarily at the beach and in a retro-styled games room. Along with some shots near a classic red car and an old Volkswagen bus, these locations infuse a sense of laid-back ease and playfulness, typical of California surf culture. I chose to shoot this entirely on 35mm film to coincide with the nostalgic and vintage feel of a bygone era whose legacy still lives on.
