“I shot these at a friend’s home and felt inspired by an eclectic assortment of elements, some of which came to mind from the start, and others which developed along the way.” This is often the case when creating something; you set off with an idea or a starting point, and as you create, the wonderful process unfolds where something new, which you hadn’t thought of before or was hidden, is added. So, creating always involves a lot of discovery.
The photographer Saige Wexler tells us about the day with her two friends Samantha Lee, the cool model of the shoot, and Sav, who provided the location and assisted with the photos. And about her original idea and how it expanded more and more during the shoot:
“Originally influenced by the delicate, playful, romantic charm of garden parties – both modern and past, the fleeting, nostalgic yearning of the enigmatic Lisbon sisters, and the fanciful, candy-colored daydreams of girlhood, this concept continued to take shape and evolve with the unique additions of two primary factors: First, the location — a friend’s lovely house, the green expanse of the surrounding yard, and the overall aesthetic of her furniture and decor. And second; certain styling accents, including the model’s own personal jewelry — some pieces treasured as sentimental heirlooms — and her trusty leather boots.
Reminiscent of some mixed and matched bygone era, this photoshoot came to fruition as an unexpected intertwining of one part soft seventies dreamland, and another part late 1800s / early 1900s whimsically indulgent afternoon tea, accompanied by some added spice from yet another time period somewhere in between… The Virgin Suicides meets Victorian / Edwardian garden party, with just a sprinkle of combined vintage pinup + biker babe flair. These components come together to exude a mesmerizing aura of romantic femininity that is daintily beautiful — with a razor sharp edge.
… Sunday morning brings the dawn in. The intimate early hours are leisurely, yet filled to the brim with simple pleasures before slowly tip-toeing, scantily clad in skivvies and a sun hat, out into the verdant yard. You close your eyes and turn your cheek up towards the shining warmth of our greatest star. As you lounge around the garden on this sun-drenched afternoon, the gourmand fragrance of berries and sweet cream entwines with the lush scent of the overgrown grass and a subtle note of worn, buttery leather. As the breeze intermittently flutters by, gossamer lace shadows dance with coy grace, and a touch of earthy must lifts from the pages of a well-loved book into the honeyed springtime air.”
