“I have worked on hundreds of records, but this is the first record I am putting out. I am relieved. It’s been such a long development. It’s a liberation of my soul as I express myself and share it with the world,” shares French-born, New York-based DJ and producer Waël Mechri-Yver, aka WAÏ, about his incredible debut EP released via Still Vor Talent/A Tribe Called Kotori.
His career is certainly fascinating to read about, so here is a brief summary: WAÏ began curating parties while studying at La Sorbonne and later at Ecole Hôtelière in Lausanne. He transformed the iconic Paris venue Man Ray into Cirque Bonheur, bringing acts like Tale of Us to the city in 2011. In 2013, he founded BABËL, an event series focused on unity and diversity. BABËL provided a platform for artists such as Carlita, Layla Benitez, and Salome Le Chat, helping them achieve global success in the dance music scene. The brand later teamed up with Black Coffee to create Gospël, a culture club in Soho, NYC, established in 2017. Performing at iconic venues like The Edge at Hudson Yards, Webster Hall, and Hï Ibiza, WAÏ has crafted unforgettable musical experiences with his sound influenced by both Eastern and Western styles. Sharing stages with artists such as Dixon, Guy Gerber, and Damian Lazarus has solidified his standing in the music industry.
With “Liberation,” the talented artist and entrepreneur propels himself into a new chapter of his artistic existence. These two excellent tracks immediately captivate us with their melodic deep sound that you just have to love, completing his journey into music, which began with a deep passion for bringing people together through celebration and music.

What initially drew you to the world of music and nightlife? (smiles)
My journey into music and nightlife began with a deep passion for bringing people together through celebration and music. As a young adult, I found myself organizing university parties at La Sorbonne and booking DJs in clubs across Paris. It was a natural progression from my love of music and my rebellious spirit, seeking freedom and self-expression after years in strict Catholic boarding schools. I’ve never managed to stay far away from stages and DJ booths ever since. Outside of the recording studios, my absolute favorite place to be is on stage, discovering or playing music.
After eight years in the making, what emotions and experiences does the debut EP “Liberation” capture for you?
“Liberation” is a deeply personal project that symbolizes freedom and renewal for me. The EP reflects my journey from a curator of music to a creator, marked by intense physical, emotional and spiritual challenges. It embodies my evolution as an artist, capturing the joy, healing and profound transformation I’ve experienced over the years.

You celebrated the release of ‘Liberation’ in Berlin. Can you describe the vibe and atmosphere of Klunkerkranich and why you chose it as the venue for this special event?
Klunkerkranich in Berlin exudes a unique, eclectic vibe that perfectly aligns with the spirit of “Liberation.” The venue’s rooftop setting, with its panoramic views of the city, creates an intimate yet expansive atmosphere for celebrating this milestone. Berlin’s rich musical heritage and vibrant nightlife scene made it the perfect place to launch the EP and share this new chapter with a diverse, appreciative audience. I have been so welcomed by the team of Stil Vor Talent (A Tribe for Kotori). I will always be grateful to Oliver Koletzki for believing in my music and to his team for being so kind.
How does performing in Berlin compare to other cities you’ve played in, such as New York or Paris?
Performing in Berlin offers a raw, unfiltered energy that is both challenging and invigorating. The city’s deep-rooted electronic music culture and its open-minded, discerning audience create a unique dynamic that differs from the sophisticated, fast-paced scenes of New York and Paris. Each city brings its own vibe – and I cherish the distinct experiences they offer – shaping my performances in unique ways. I have lived in so many cities, each has its own flavor, groove and perfume. I love discovering new energies. It’s enchanting and magical.
What inspired the collaboration with Marieme on the lead single ‘Sanctify’?
Marieme and I share a long history and a deep, soulful connection. Her story, as an American-Senegalese singer facing cultural challenges, deeply resonated with me. Her voice, rich with wisdom and healing qualities, was exactly what I envisioned for “Sanctify.” Our collaboration was a natural extension of our shared passions for music and the sacredness of love, resulting in a track that is both hopeful and therapeutic. Music is medicine, and Marieme’s voice is a beautiful cure.

The track ‘Faith’ is described as an ode to transformation. Can you delve deeper into this?
“Faith” is an eight-minute journey that encapsulates the essence of transformation. It’s about embracing change, overcoming fears and finding strength in the face of adversity. The track mirrors my personal journey, reflecting moments of profound introspection and growth. It’s a sonic representation of the resilience and inner faith that has guided me through the highs and lows of my artistic evolution.
How does the title ‘Liberation’ reflect both the music on the EP and your personal journey as an artist?
“Liberation” symbolizes the release of my true artistic self and the shedding of past constraints. It represents my journey from the shadows of curating others’ work to stepping into the light as a creator. The music on the EP is a testament to this newfound freedom, blending soulful electronica with global influences, and echoing my personal quest for authenticity and self-expression.
You’ve collaborated with numerous artists like Dixon and Damian Lazarus. What have you learned from these collaborations?
Collaborating with talents like Dixon and Damian Lazarus have been an invaluable learning experience. These collaborations taught me the importance of creative synergy and the power of diverse perspectives. Each artist brings a unique energy and vision, pushing me to explore new dimensions of my music and constantly innovate. I’ve started working, booking and learning with them since 2010 in Paris and then in NYC. Crosstown Rebels and Innervisions are incredible underground labels and have had a deep impact on my musical tastes and curations over the years. Working with Cocoon also showed me what was possible with an electronic brand. Sven Väth is a pioneer and a leader!
As I am launching and developing BABËL Music, those legendary artists and label heads showed me the way, and I will always be grateful for their inspiration. They showed me what was possible, and I hope to keep their legacy alive.
I played a few times alongside Damian Lazarus and closed after Dixon on Halloween in NYC a couple of years ago. It has always been epic! I love those guys. The underground scene owes them a lot.
How has your background in hospitality management influenced your approach to creating immersive nightlife experiences?
My hospitality background has profoundly shaped my approach to nightlife. Understanding the intricacies of ambiance, design and guest experience has allowed me to create immersive, memorable events. It’s about crafting a holistic experience that goes beyond music, ensuring every element – from decor to atmosphere – contributes to a captivating and cohesive whole.

Innovation comes from a deep understanding of the industry’s trends and a willingness to take risks, always pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
Your Instagram description says, “Music takes me where I want to be.” If music can take you anywhere, what is your ultimate destination or dream setting where you envision your music thriving?
My ultimate destination is a place where music serves as a universal language: BABËL – connecting people from all walks of life. I envision my music thriving in settings that promote unity and celebration, be it an intimate rooftop in Berlin, a grand stage in Ibiza or a vibrant street carnaval in Rio. It’s about creating moments of pure joy and connection through music.
