Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about feelings—how to keep them from taking over. I’ve learned that it’s sometimes better to just let them be, to observe, like watching the clouds change overhead, knowing that the storm will eventually pass. Chasing constant happiness isn’t the way to go. Despite what we’re told, it’s not a permanent state, nor is it something we’re designed to feel at all times. This idea, I think, lies close to the heart of Maver’s latest EP, Spirals. It’s a personal reflection on emotional health and a journey that Maver invites us to share in.
Maver’s new EP, Spirals, delves into the depths of mental health struggles, resonating with the weight of emotions he’s navigated himself. As he puts it, “The title Spirals reflects how mental health can often feel like a downward spiral—like you’re stuck in your own head, going deeper and deeper. But it’s also a reminder that you don’t have to go through it alone. The main message of the EP is: “It’s okay to be sad. Let’s be sad together, and maybe we’ll be happier.” This honesty gives Spirals an anchoring warmth, inviting listeners to pause and sit with whatever emotions they’re experiencing, knowing that these feelings connect us all.
“There’s this sense of comfort in knowing that we’re all going through similar things, and sometimes, just sharing that with someone can do wonders.”
Raised in Perth, Australia, Maver grew up steeped in the feeling of a landscape both vast and isolating, a place where his creative process flourished in solitary hours. “A lot of the songs,” Maver shares, “came from reflecting on my own experiences with anxiety and depression, as well as conversations I’ve had with friends who’ve gone through the same things.” In his music, he allows those raw, late-night thoughts to find expression, often creating in the quiet early hours, alone or in collaboration with close friends like LORA, Ukiyo, and jnr. These moments of introspective creation were unpolished yet genuine, the kind of reflections that seem truest in the middle of the night.
The EP offers a space where those spiraling feelings find release, where listeners can come as they are, even on their hardest days. Through tracks like “Damn Sad” and “Short Term Memory,” Maver allows the vulnerability of emotional struggle to breathe. As he says, “There’s this sense of comfort in knowing that we’re all going through similar things, and sometimes, just sharing that with someone can do wonders. That’s what Spirals is all about—feeling what you’re feeling, and knowing that it’s okay.”
