Enjoy this mystical and sensual photo series by Anouk Brouwer, who follows Boudicca Taitano, a dancer torn between her Indigenous roots and the pulse of New York City. They’re capturing the essence of vulnerability and the silent battles of cultural identity. They are telling a story that grips the soul, challenging viewers to confront their own notions of identity and belonging.
Boudicca Taitano: “This photoshoot with Anouk is a part of a series where I explore my relationship with my identity. While I have family who grew up on Guam, others who grew up on the Yakama Native Reservation, I am originally from Utqiagvik, Alaska and I am now living in New York City. I have a deeply complicated relationship with my Chamorro and Native identity. I struggle with the concept of what it means to be indigenous in the modern world. This photo series with Anouk expands on my exploration of my Chamorro identity and how I represent my communities as a dancer in New York. The use of florals are a nod to the depictions of islander culture in the US while the nudity represents feeling stripped of my Chamorro culture having grown up in the states.”
